FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 31, 2009

Dairy is the economic driver for Pennsylvania’s number one industry, agriculture. In Cumberland County, site of our meeting, it’s estimated there was a decline of 333 jobs supported by the dairy industry between 1995 and 2005. The slow downward slide has escalated throughout the state with a significant impact on the Commonwealth’s economy. That makes the dairy industry and its future in Pennsylvania important to all your readers. Dairy farmers in Pennsylvania can no longer think of themselves as local producers.

PDMP invites you to cover a growing story about

Today’s dairy farmers operate in an age when the Internet can impact public perception in the blink of an eye and where a change on the menu of a national restaurant chain can mean the difference between milk selling at a fair price or not. Overseas purchases and sales of dairy related products affect production and the income that supports the state’s dairy industry, which ultimately plays a large role in each county’s economy.

Smart dairy producers are judging where their farm fits in the new marketplace and how global influences will change their future. Our featured speakers bring a wide perspective to the subject from global marketing to milk pricing and selling dairy to the consumer.

  • Alan Reed, Sr. Vice President, U.S. Manufacturing & Ingredient Marketing, DMI
  • Robert Schupper, Dairy Category Manager, Giant Food Stores
  • John H. Howard, Staff Attorney, Pennsylvania Milk Marketing Board

The registration desk will open at the fire hall on Thursday, November 5 at 8:00 am. President Rod Hissong of Mercersburg will start the day with the PDMP Annual Meeting at 8:30 am. The educational program is to begin at 9:00 am. We are scheduled to conclude at 3:00 pm following the tour of Giant Distribution Center. Lunch at the fire hall is included.

PDMP represents the state’s most progressive dairy producers, their suppliers, and industry supporters, who have joined together “seeking to improve the dairy industry in Pennsylvania through increased productivity and profitability.”
