2010 Forage Data | Invitation

February 15, 2010

An invitation to seed industry professionals. . .

The Professional Dairy Managers of Pennsylvania (PDMP) is soliciting entries for the 2010 corn silage hybrid trial. The collaborative effort of PDMP and The Pennsylvania State University maintains a top-notch corn silage hybrid research project.

In November PDMP will present the results of the corn silage hybrid testing as part of the PSU Dairy Nutrition Conference. This presentation allows for open dialogue between the PDMP Corn Silage Committee persons and industry representatives. We encourage you to attend this conference, view the results, and join in on the discussion. More details will be available at a later date.

Please note the following changes will be in place for 2010:

  1. Groups 0 and 1 as well as Groups 3 and 4 will be planted, tested, and reported together. This will allow for a greater number of hybrids in each group and reduce non-significant findings due to smaller groups
  2. We will not be planting a separate test for corn rootworm traited hybrids in 2010. 3) BMR hybrids are welcome in our testing and will be tested together with non-BMR hybrids. Please identify your BMR’s on the entry form.
  3. We will continue to utilize manure applied plots, visiting with the producers to explain the need for a more even delivery of manure.
  4. Populations will be reported as is with no thinning.
  5. In response to input from our PDMP producers, we have added a 101-110 day test at the South Central locations that will be analyzed separately from the central PA test of the 101-110 day hybrids.
  6. We will describe varieties of entered hybrids on a separate sheet with the details of the traits listed there. However for the year end reports, traits will be reported in a generic fashion as we have in the past.

Online forms can be accessed at: www.pdmp.org Entry forms should be submitted electronically to Tammy Perkins at taperkins10@yahoo.com. Forms can be completed on line.

The maturity groups and associated entry fees for 2010 are as follows:

Group 0 = 88-94 Days Relative Maturity (RM) $370
Group 1 = 95-100 Days Relative Maturity $370
Group 2 = 101 – 110 Days Relative Maturity $530
Group 2SC = 101 – 110 Days Relative Maturity $530
Group 3 = 111 – 115 Days Relative Maturity $530
Group 4 = 116 – 120 Days Relative Maturity $530

The testing protocol and directions for application are attached. The deadline for submission of forms and entry fees is March 10, 2010. Seed must be submitted no later than March 19, 2010.
